Teaching the Novel and Short Fiction

Focus:
We seek manuscripts that address various practical and theoretical approaches to teaching the novel, short story, or other forms of fiction. Manuscripts in the fields of literary studies and creative writing are equally welcome. Some areas of particular interest include:
  • Innovative techniques for teaching specific novels, stories, or collections of stories
  • Explorations of the concerns in teaching novels or other prose fiction (e.g. deciding how much biographical, historical, or contextual information to include)
  • Accounts of the potentials and complications of interdisciplinary teaching (e.g. literature coupled with art, history, psychology, or sociology)
  • Reviews of resources (print, electronic, film, or other) for teaching particular novels, stories, or collections of stories
  • Accounts of the surprises and challenges in teaching English-language literature to international students
  • Techniques for integrating creative writing into the literature classroom
Manuscripts addressing other areas of teaching prose fiction will also be given careful consideration.

There is no restriction on the source language of the works or the approaches that could be discussed, but submitted manuscripts should ideally present ideas and practices that transcend the particulars of a given story or set of stories.

Who May Submit:
Instructors are invited to share their experiences and strategies for teaching novels and short fiction at the high school, community college, or university level. Manuscripts are particularly sought from instructors who have developed new and meaningful ways to teach reading and/or writing prose fiction, whether in the traditional classroom, through on-line courses, or with a combination of class meetings and web-based work. Please identify your submission with keyword: NOVEL
