ABSTRACT
Over the past decade, instructors have increasingly been asked to handle disruptive student behavior,
behavior that can have a devastating effect on the classroom environment and impede student learning.
Partly to blame are ineffective communication practices that create a gap in expectations and understandings.
Presented in this paper are three strategies that aim at improving communication both between the instructor
and the students as well as among the students themselves, helping reinforce a climate that nurtures student
learning.
