ABSTRACT
Faculty and students who wanted to continue the conversation after the bell rang used to do so in hallways and
offices over cups of coffee. Now, a variety of electronic formats are available to enable these conversations
to continue virtually, including online discussion boards, electronic mail, and, increasingly, social media
sites such as Facebook. This paper explores three case studies of social media use in extending communication
outside the university’s walls, including faculty-led and student-led efforts as well as one directed at program alumni.
