Beyond Celebrating Diversity in Schools

ABSTRACT  
This article examines the effectiveness of a diversity event at an inner-city high school.  
Through interviews and observation, it reports that the cultural celebration alone falls short 
in creating a sense of inclusion and improving race relations at the school.  The argument is 
that multicultural education must be contextualized in the daily lives of the students to better 
meet the challenges facing today’s increasingly diverse secondary schools.
