Disconnecting to Reconnect

ABSTRACT  
It is challenging to engage pre-service elementary teachers in mathematical content activities 
because the procedural material is so familiar. Described here are three activities that were 
disconnected from the rote routines of pre-service teachers that required them to think and 
reason for a solution. The resulting insights on conceptual and pedagogical knowledge are discussed.
