Contextualizing Literacy on the Border
           Barbara Greybeck, Sam Houston State University, TX            Mary Petron, Sam Houston State University, TX ABSTRACT Cultural practices in the borderlands between Texas and Mexico differ significantly from other areas of the United States, yet school practices are based upon norms established in Austin and Washington D.C. A disconnect is seen between conceptualizations of literacy in the local community and literacy instruction in the schools. The importance of literacy for the empowerment of the people in this region is highlighted.
