Contextualizing Literacy on the Border
Barbara Greybeck, Sam Houston State University, TX
Mary Petron, Sam Houston State University, TX
Cultural practices in the borderlands between Texas and Mexico
differ significantly from other areas of the United States, yet
school practices are based upon norms established in Austin and
Washington D.C. A disconnect is seen between conceptualizations
of literacy in the local community and literacy instruction in the
schools. The importance of literacy for the empowerment of the
people in this region is highlighted.
