International service learning is a growing pedagogy with unique benefits, goals
and challenges. This paper discusses a service learning study abroad course in
which the content was dependent not only on contact with the elders of the community
as the keepers of the cultural heritage but also on sensitivity to cultural and
generational differences. Implications for future international service learning
courses are addressed.
