ABSTRACT  
Making the humanities relevant and engaging to the general public is one of 
the most pressing issues in the academy today. The story of the collaboration 
between Multnomah County Library and Portland State University in Portland, 
Oregon around the One City, One Book project is an exemplary tale about the 
benefits of civic collaboration for the library system and for the university 
as a whole as well as for the humanities.
