Academic Exchange Quarterly uses virtual organization structure
to produce a traditional product, an academic journal in print/paper format.
To understand journal's working environment, we offer the following comparison
of a traditional and a virtual organization.
A traditional organization can be identified by four characteristics:
(1) organizational boundaries/structure,
(3) time of operation,
around a particular job description that takes place in a particular space,
e.g., office in a particular building, street, town, state...
A virtual organization is identified by objectives rather than by the four
traditional organization characteristics.
Work is no longer the
place you go to. It is, rather, what you do. You can work any time and any
place. In a virtual organization, work is more
goal focused, task oriented, and responsibility driven.
For example, in Academic Exchange Quarterly,
traditional organization paper manuals and time-consuming document-related processes
have been abandoned in favor of Web-based administrative platform.
