Emerging technologies are transforming education. Instruction is being delivered in a variety of ways beyond the classroom, including through online or hybrid “blended” courses. Faculty members are increasingly becoming designers and facilitators of online learning environments who use a variety of tools to achieve pedagogical objectives. Some of these tools include Learning Management Systems, internet resources, discussion forums, educational applications of social networking, WIKI’s, blogs, e-Portfolios, pod-casting, online tutorials and simulations, educational gaming, and virtual environments, to name a few. E-learning involves the use of technology to enhance teaching, learning, and the assessment of learning outcomes.
The focus of this topic is to explore research and practice related to educational technologies. Questions to be explored include: How are innovative technologies being used in education, and with what effects? What are the best practices for improving student learning and satisfaction? How is technology being used to support collaborative learning? How can faculty be best supported to use instructional technology effectively? What challenges are faculty and students experiencing and how can these challenges be overcome? What are the perceived benefits and drawbacks of new technologies? How is technology being used to facilitate assessment? If you are actively using educational technologies or are conducting research in this area, please consider submitting an article. Case studies, insights based on experiences, and conclusions based on data are welcome.
